This is where the king lives. Feel the experience of exploring the royal palace. The complex is a center of Javanese culture and contains a museum displaying royal artifacts. It is guarded by the Yogyakarta Kraton Guards.

Stop At: Water Castle (Tamansari), Jl. Taman, 55133 Indonesia
An old article described it as a “water castle” (Dutch: waterkasteel). This is the site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. Built in the mid-18th century, the Taman Sari had multiple functions, such as a resting area, a workshop, a meditation area, a defense area, and a hiding place.

The street is the centre of Yogyakarta’s largest tourist district surrounded with many hotels, restaurants, and shops nearby. Sidewalks on both sides of the street are crowded with small stalls selling a variety of goods. In the evening several open-air street side restaurants, called lesehan, operate along the street. This is the street of the artists. Street musicians, painters, and other artists exhibit their creations on this road.

The stalls at Beringharjo Market sell a variety of goods, including batik, clothing, souvenirs, fast food, jajanan pasar (market snacks) (id), basic ingredients, household items, jamu (traditional herbal medicine), and antiques.

Stop At: Fort Vredeburg Museum, Jl. Margo Mulyo Jl. A. Yani No.6, 55122 Indonesia
During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, Fort Vredeburg was taken over by the Japanese army and made into the army’s headquarters and war prison. After the Japanese left in 1945, Fort Vredeburg served the Indonesian Army as military command post, barracks and prison for suspected members of the communist party. The museum includes collections of old photographs, historical objects and replicas. A diorama portraying Indonesia’s journey for independence is also displayed in the museum.
