Toraja is the homeland of numerous traditional Torajan villages, but Kete Ketsu is perhaps the best known with Tongkanan houses in their most authentic form. This ancient village offers visitors a complete sight of Tana Toraja society-life with very aged buildings, natural fiber roofs, symbolic elements, traditional practices and artifacts. Kete Kesu is probably most recognized for its death-celebrating traditions, as well as world class carving and sculpture handicraft. There is also a local-run museum in the neighborhood where you can learn more about the culture and customs of of the ancient Torajan people.

The Torajans are an ethnic group indigenous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Their population is approximately 1,100,000, of whom 450,000 live in the regency of Tana Toraja. Most of the population is Christian, and others are Muslim or have local animist beliefs known as aluk.
