Itinerary

Stop At: Celuk Village, Jalan Raya Celuk, Sukawati 80582 Indonesia
As you enter the neighborhood, you’re going to feel as if you were in a jewelry exhibition. On ether side of the road are established many art shops showcasing their finest works inside a glass display case. You can take a closer look at them to appreciate it and buy some if you really like it. Most vendors and smiths usually accept custom made jewelries but you can always ask them to make sure. Most of them are used to dealing with foreign tourists so their English should be fair enough to promote a conversation. If you’re confident enough, you may ask their permission to forge and shape your own jewelries. Some of them might allow you, even guide you how to use the tools properly. Be careful, though, because molding silvers and golds involves fire and fire can burn your fingers pretty badly, not to say your money as well.

Stop At: Barong & Kris Dance, Jambe Culture Village, Sukawati 80582 Indonesia
The play starts at 9.30 am, but if you arrive early you can mingle with the performers back stage. a good friend, a local in the area and a member of the dance troupe took me back stage to get a first hand look at the bustling preparations of a Balinese performance. The performers painting and decorating their faces with bright make up, and the intricate costumes hanging on the railings swaying in the wind, waiting for their time to shine. It takes a lot of time and energy to put such a performance together, which happens every day.
It is advised that you read the synopsis at the beginning of the play as the dialog is completely in Balinese – once you know the story, you can sit back and enjoy the dance and the music play out.

For over a thousand years, Batuan has been a village of artists and craftsmen, old legends and mysterious tales. Batuan’s recorded history begins in A.D. 1022, with an inscription that is housed in the main village temple, Pura Desa Batuan. The name “Batuan” or “Baturan” mentioned here prompts villagers to joke about being “tough as stone” or “eating rocks” — as batu means “stone” in Balinese. But it likely refers to an ancient megalithic tradition in which standing stones served as meeting places and ceremonial sites for the worship of ancestral spirits. Because Batuan became a center from which Buddhist priests and brahmans spread to the main court centers of south Bali, the village has an unusual preponderance of brahmans.
